BEST SMARTPHONES OF THE WORLD

Samsung Galaxy S9

Hands down, the best phone you can buy right now. It's powerful, takes fantastic photos, and is gorgeous. And there's a big one too, if you like that sort of thing.

It isn’t a huge leap forward from its predecessor. In fact, it looks pretty much identical to the S8. But when was there anything wrong with more of a good thing?
The S9 simply fixes the few things we didn’t like about the Galaxy S8, gives things a general spring clean, and upgrades the camera to ensure Samsung remains on tech’s cutting edge.
Already own our favorite phone from last year? Then the Galaxy S9 isn’t for you. It’s for people who didn’t make the same upgrade - and judged purely on that basis, it's a truly brilliant blower.

Google Pixel 2 XL

The Pixel 2 XL puts practicality before panache but delivers where it counts with an incredible camera and the definitive Android experience

It all started with the Nexus, and with the introduction of the Pixel, Google redefined what an Android experience should be. Seamless as it was, it still lacked the desirability of its iOS and even some Android competitors.
Enter 2017 aka the anti-bezel revolution. The Pixel’s put on a slick new suit for round 2, and this time it’s camped up everything we loved about the original Pixel. With added smarts and an even better camera, is this the Android we’ve been waiting for? OK Google, let’s see what you’ve got.

OnePlus 5T

The same great performance, same streamlined Android UI, and same funky twin cameras - only now with an 18:9 screen and skinny bezels. Without a price hike to go with it, too
It’s impossibly difficult to nitpick or find a fault here. Everything from the design and build to the features, performance and OS work together to offer the slickest Android experience ever. To top that off, the battery performance is simply mind-boggling. What’s even more mind-boggling is the way it charges from nought to 100 percent in about an hour. Dash charge has truly changed the way I charge my smartphone for good. However, the good bits do not end there.

Apple iPhone X

Face ID and a front-filling screen make this the best-looking iPhone ever - even if it'll take a little while to get used to the missing home button

Apple insiders are eager to claim that the team took more than five years to perfect the form, design and engineering bits that make up the all-screen superhero of a phone that will be unleashed upon the waiting world on November 3. While I can’t claim to have vetted that little piece of information, what is evident is that this really is the best iPhone you have held in your hand in the last five years. The 5.8in Super Retina screen has edged out the home button from the front fascia of the phone and this means, you guessed it - more screen space in less space! The resulting dimensions sit smack between the 8 and 8 Plus. Between the 7 and the 7 Plus. Between the 6 and....you get the point.
What this proves is that with the amalgamation of new technologies, the sweet spot has finally been achieved for one handed use, without squinting to read emails. The seamless nature of the iPhone X’s construction further amplifies the “hand feel”, which is beyond an iota of doubt, the best there is. The glass back fuses organically into the stainless-steel side band which relays on to the front glass and as a whole, it just feels as solid as any iPhone has ever felt in your hand. In fact, after the iPhone 5, this might be the sexiest iPhone to have made it out of Jony Ive’s secret toy shop.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8

Super massive, super-powered, and super niche - Samsung still has the best ph-Tablet, but it's marginal gains over the vanilla Galaxy S8
A big, supercharged handset with a jaw-dropping display, it’s every bit the kick-ass flagship phablet you’d expect. The headline change for 2017? This Note really, really shouldn’t go ‘boom’ anytime soon. That’s what Samsung promises, and it has thankfully proved true in my time with the phone so far.
What you’re left with, then, is a slightly bigger Galaxy S8, with a built-in stylus and a dual lens camera. Or your favorite old productivity powerhouse, now with a few new bells and whistles. That means most people are still gonna be best off with the standard S8, but for a select few, this is the ultimate Galaxy phone.
